People ask me all the time what kind of guitar to get for a beginner. There are a lot of choices but some stand out. It is hard to go wrong with a Mexican Fender Stratocaster. These guitars are Fender’s “middle of the road” models. These can be found in the $300 price range and are really quite nice. As far as acoustic guitars, Seagull makes a nice solid top instrument for under $400.00. BTW, a solid spruce top separates the really cheap guitars from the better sounding instruments. Alvarez also makes some nice guitars in that same price range. Also, for smaller kids check out guitars that have a smaller body (OM size) or even 3/4 size like Baby Taylor.
